Cutting edge brain-based psychotherapy

Ms Leena Nanan is a Master’s Level EMDR-trained Clinical Psychologist and Neurofeedback Practitioner.

Leena has been, since 2011, under the mentorship of Waveney Richards (Clinical Psychologist, Trauma Specialist) and Dr. Paul Swingle (Clinical Psychoneurophysiologist), both of whom are leaders in their respective fields.

Serving both the north and south populations in Trinidad, she operates out of two locations: Port of Spain and Gulf View, where she offers psychoneurotherapy to children and adults alike.

This specialized treatment is customized based on a client’s specific brainwave profile. Using EEG biofeedback, clients are guided to transform their brainwave architecture to regulate attention, emotion and learning, thereby creating the optimal conditions for the resolution of psychological trauma.

Clinical Psychoneurotherapeutic treatment combines neurofeedback with traditional psychotherapy techniques from:
  • EMDR
  • Flash Technique
  • Somatic Experiencing
  • Re-evaluation/Peer Counseling
  • Polyvagal Theory
  • Emotional Freedom Therapy
  • Mindfulness Meditation

This unique approach to treatment addresses the interaction between a person’s underlying brainwave dysfunction and the specific traumatic life events that often trigger problem symptoms (e.g. depression, anxiety, sleep difficulty, problems with attention and memory).

Conditions treated include:
•           psychological trauma/developmental trauma
•           depression
•           anxiety
•           attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder
•           learning disorders
•           insomnia & sleep quality disorders
•           seizure disorders
•           fibromyalgia & psychogenic pain
•           addiction
•           chronic fatigue
•           traumatic brain injury
•           stroke

A second level of focus of her practice, that goes beyond treatment, is Optimal Performance Training. This is geared towards individuals seeking to maintain peak performance in their domain, such as business executives and elite athletes.

Leena also has a background in Psychoeducational Assessment through part-time work under the consultancy of Dr Korinne Louison at the Ministry of Education’s Student Support Services Division.

Services Offered:

Psychotherapy creates a relationship of secure attachment within which clients can learn to feel safe within themselves.
Adaptive self-soothing, emotional and behavioural regulation skills are taught and practiced in order to stabilize and contain psychological distress.

Once a client can reliably self soothe, trauma resolution methods such as EMDR/Flash are utilized to allow the brain to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories, which create “sore spots” or “triggers” that often underlie psychological distress or behavioural concerns. This facilitates the reorganization of neural circuitry that constructs coherent narratives of traumatic events so that they are not re-lived in the present moment.

This combination of skill-building, distress tolerance and trauma resolution helps clients recover from distressing life experiences and lays a strong foundation for the development of healthy attachments. Further, it reactivates the brain’s wiring in the areas of pleasure, engagement, control, and trust and provides clients with a sense of empowerment over their daily lives.

Telehealth Psychotherapy (Zoom)
Flexible distance therapy options to suit your needs while staying within your safe place.

Neurofeedback is a cutting edge, drug free therapeutic technique by which individuals are trained to alter their brainwave activity. The brain produces electrical signals, called brainwaves, which can be measured from the surface of the skull. Small sensors are placed on the scalp to detect and record changes in a person's brainwave activity. Problems occur when we produce brainwave signals that are inappropriate to the task at hand. This information is immediately analysed by a computer that then presents real-time sound and video feedback based on the brain’s performance. Using this feedback, clients learn to regulate or control their own brain states over time until changes are stable. By training brain patterns towards normative ranges, there is usually a reduction in problem symptoms and behaviours, as well as positive changes in physical, emotional, and cognitive states.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Biofeedback
This is a biofeedback technique that allows you to change your heart rhythms in order to bring you into a state of "Coherence" — an optimal state in which the heart, mind and emotions are operating in sync and in balance, and the immune, hormonal and nervous systems function in a state of harmonious coordination. This is done using a pulse sensor that translates heart rate data into graphics displayed on the computer screen.Using these interactive biofeedback exercises and games, you can create optimal mental states that build resilience, increase energy, and promote focus, mental clarity and emotional balance.

Sleep Quality Assessment
The Sleep Monitor is a take home device that provides a real-time caption of your sleep quality. It consists of a gentle headband worn at night while asleep which communicates wirelessly with a bedside monitor that tracks your sleep patterns throughout the night. The headband uses a sensor that measures electrical signals produced by the brain at the frontal cortex as you shift through different levels of sleep. Typically, four nights of data is required which assists in diagnosis of your exact sleep quality challenges.

Cranial Electrostimulation Therapy
The CES Plus is handheld device that uses a gentle electrical impulse applied to the ear lobes that is transferred to the brain. This helps to restore the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain back to pre-stress levels, thus reducing anxiety and improving mood and sleep quality. It also helps to sustain your gains made in neurotherapy.
